Important Security Notice
During the setup process, you will create a recovery seed phrase that gives complete access to your cryptocurrency. Follow these critical security practices:
- Never take photos of your recovery seed
- Never store your recovery seed digitally (no screenshots, text files, emails, or cloud storage)
- Set up your device in a private location away from cameras and other people
- Consider purchasing directly from SafeVault or authorized resellers only
Before You Begin
Before starting the setup process, make sure you have:
- Your new, unopened SafeVault device
- The USB cable included with your device
- A computer or smartphone for installing the companion app
- Paper and pen for writing down your recovery seed phrase
- 15-30 minutes of uninterrupted time in a private location
It's also recommended to have:
- A secure metal backup solution (like SafeVault Steel Backup) for long-term storage of your recovery seed
- A secure location to store your backup, such as a home safe or safety deposit box
Step 1: Verify Package Integrity
Before proceeding with setup, it's important to verify that your device hasn't been tampered with:
- Check that the package is sealed with SafeVault's tamper-evident security stickers
- Verify that the security stickers don't show signs of tampering (look for "VOID" patterns or damage)
- Confirm that all components listed on the box are included in the package
If you notice any signs of tampering, DO NOT use the device and contact our support team immediately at [email protected].
Step 2: Install the SafeVault App
The SafeVault companion app is required to set up and use your device:
- Visit safevaultdevices.com/downloads from your computer or smartphone
- Download the appropriate version for your operating system:
- Windows (8, 10, 11)
- macOS (10.13 or later)
- Linux (Ubuntu 18.04 or later)
- iOS (App Store)
- Android (Google Play Store)
- Install the app following your system's standard installation procedure
- Launch the SafeVault app
Step 3: Connect Your Device
Now it's time to connect your SafeVault device to your computer or smartphone:
- Remove the device from its packaging
- Connect the device to your computer using the provided USB cable
- For SafeVault Pro X or Enterprise: The device will power on automatically
- For SafeVault Lite or Mini: Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds
- If using a smartphone, connect according to your device model:
- SafeVault Pro X or Enterprise: Use Bluetooth pairing by pressing the Bluetooth button on the device
- SafeVault Lite or Mini: Use the appropriate USB adapter for your smartphone
- The SafeVault app should automatically detect your device
Step 4: Initialize Your Device
Follow these steps to set up your device for the first time:
- In the SafeVault app, select "Initialize new device"
- On your SafeVault device, confirm that you want to set up a new wallet
- Create a PIN code on your device:
- Choose a strong PIN between 4-8 digits that you can remember
- Avoid obvious combinations like "1234" or your birth year
- Enter your PIN on the device (not on your computer or phone)
- Confirm your PIN by entering it a second time
- Your device will now generate a new wallet and display your recovery seed phrase
PIN Protection
Your PIN protects your device from unauthorized use. If someone finds or steals your device, they won't be able to access your cryptocurrency without knowing your PIN. After multiple incorrect PIN attempts, your SafeVault device will automatically reset to protect your funds.
Step 5: Backup Your Recovery Seed
This is the MOST CRITICAL step in the setup process:
- Your device will display a 12 or 24-word recovery seed phrase on its screen
- Write down each word carefully on paper in the exact order shown
- Double-check each word for accuracy
- Number each word (1-24) to maintain the correct order
- Write legibly with a pen (not pencil)
- Verify your recovery seed by following the prompts on your device
- The device will ask you to confirm specific words from your seed phrase
- Enter the requested words using the device interface
- For long-term storage, consider transferring your seed phrase to a metal backup solution like the SafeVault Steel Backup
Critical Security Information
Your recovery seed phrase provides COMPLETE ACCESS to your cryptocurrency. Anyone who has this phrase can access your funds, even without your device or PIN. Keep it secure and private at all times.
SafeVault will NEVER ask for your recovery seed phrase. If anyone (including someone claiming to be from SafeVault support) asks for your seed phrase, it is a scam.
Step 6: Name Your Device
Give your device a name to identify it in the SafeVault app:
- In the SafeVault app, you'll be prompted to name your device
- Choose a name that helps you identify this specific device
- Click "Continue" to proceed
Step 7: Install Firmware Updates
Ensure your device has the latest security features and cryptocurrency support:
- The SafeVault app will automatically check for firmware updates
- If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to install it
- Keep your device connected until the update is complete
- Your device will restart after the update
Step 8: Add Cryptocurrency Accounts
Now you can add specific cryptocurrency accounts to your device:
- In the SafeVault app, select "Add account"
- Choose the cryptocurrency you want to add (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.)
- The app will communicate with your device to generate the appropriate addresses
- Your new account will appear in the app dashboard
- Repeat for each cryptocurrency you want to manage
Step 9: Verify Receiving Addresses
Before receiving any cryptocurrency, it's important to verify your addresses:
- In the SafeVault app, select a cryptocurrency account
- Click "Receive" to display your receiving address
- On your SafeVault device, navigate to the same cryptocurrency and view the address
- Visually compare the address shown in the app with the one displayed on your device
- Only if they match exactly should you use this address to receive funds
Address Verification Warning
Always verify receiving addresses on your hardware device's screen before sending cryptocurrency. Malware on your computer could potentially display a different address in the app than the one actually being used, redirecting your funds to an attacker.
Step 10: Secure Your Device and Backup
Now that your device is set up, take these final security steps:
- Store your device in a secure location when not in use
- Store your recovery seed backup in a different secure location (ideally fireproof and waterproof)
- Consider creating a duplicate backup stored in a third location for critical holdings
- Never share your PIN or recovery seed with anyone
- Periodically check for firmware updates in the SafeVault app
Advanced Setup Options
Adding a Passphrase (Optional Advanced Security)
For enhanced security, advanced users can add a passphrase (sometimes called a "25th word"):
- In the SafeVault app, go to Settings > Security
- Select "Enable Passphrase"
- Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your passphrase on the device
A passphrase adds an additional layer of security beyond your recovery seed. It effectively creates a completely separate wallet that can only be accessed with both your recovery seed AND your passphrase. This provides protection even if someone discovers your recovery seed phrase.
Important: If you forget your passphrase, there is NO way to recover your funds. Unlike the PIN, there is no backup or reset process for a lost passphrase. Only enable this feature if you're confident in your ability to securely manage and remember an additional password.
Setting Up Multi-Signature Wallets (Enterprise Model)
SafeVault Enterprise devices support multi-signature wallets that require multiple devices to authorize transactions:
- In the SafeVault app, select "Create Multi-Signature Wallet"
- Specify the number of devices required (M) out of the total number of devices (N)
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect and configure each device
- Backup the multi-signature wallet configuration information
For detailed instructions on setting up multi-signature wallets, please refer to the SafeVault Enterprise user manual.
Troubleshooting Common Setup Issues
Device Not Recognized
If your computer or smartphone doesn't recognize your SafeVault device:
- Try a different USB port or cable
- Restart your computer and the SafeVault app
- Ensure your operating system is updated
- Check if you need to install device drivers (Windows only)
Seed Verification Fails
If your device indicates that seed verification failed:
- Double-check each word against the BIP39 word list
- Ensure you're entering the words in the correct order
- Verify you're using the correct word when multiple similar words exist
- Start the setup process again if necessary
