Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hardware wallet and why do I need one?

A hardware wallet is a physical device specifically designed to securely store the private keys for your cryptocurrency. Unlike software wallets or exchange accounts, hardware wallets keep your private keys in an offline environment, protecting them from online threats such as malware, phishing attacks, and exchange hacks. If you own a significant amount of cryptocurrency or plan to hold for the long term, a hardware wallet provides essential security for your digital assets.

How do I backup my hardware wallet?

When you first initialize your SafeVault device, you'll be prompted to write down a recovery seed phrase (typically 12 or 24 words). This seed phrase is the backup of all the private keys managed by your device. It's crucial to write this down accurately on paper or stamp it into a metal backup (like our SafeVault Steel Backup) and store it in a secure location. Never store your seed phrase digitally or take photos of it. If your device is lost, damaged, or stolen, you can use this seed phrase to recover all your cryptocurrency on a new device.

What happens if SafeVault goes out of business?

Your funds remain safe even if our company ceases operations. SafeVault devices use industry-standard BIP39/44 seed phrases that are compatible with many other wallet solutions. As long as you have your recovery seed phrase, you can import your wallets into compatible hardware or software wallets to regain access to your funds. This is why we emphasize the importance of properly backing up your seed phrase in a secure, physical format.

Do I need an internet connection to use my hardware wallet?

Your SafeVault device doesn't need to be connected to the internet to secure your private keys. However, to view your balances and send transactions, you'll need to connect the device to an internet-connected computer or smartphone running our companion app or compatible third-party wallet software. The private keys never leave the device - instead, transactions are signed securely on the device itself and then broadcast to the blockchain through the connected computer or smartphone.

Which cryptocurrencies are supported?

SafeVault devices support a wide range of cryptocurrencies, with our Pro X and Enterprise models supporting over 1,500 different coins and tokens. This includes major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and XRP, as well as ERC-20, BEP-20, and other token standards. We regularly update our firmware to add support for new cryptocurrencies. You can check the full list of supported cryptocurrencies on the specifications page of each product.
